Yankees: Five Underrated FA Starting Pitchers

Steven Matz's Blue Jays debut was spectacular

Steven Matz

Matz, the Long Island native, is coming off a stellar 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays. When healthy, Matz has proven to be a solid mid-rotation arm, as seen over his last 3 full seasons. The left-hander possesses great control, walking only 6% of batters. In 29 starts, Matz went 14-7 with an ERA of 3.82. Like Gray, he hovers around the 150 IP mark, not going late into games very often. A promising sign was his ability to limit the long ball, with his HR/9 decreasing each season except the pandemic year. Matz is due to make his FA decision on Wednesday (11/24), and with the Yankees not being linked to him so far, it seems that a Matz move to the Bronx may be a longshot. Interestingly enough, one team heavily linked to Matz is the Boston Red Sox, who are in desperate need of a starter after the departure of Eduardo Rodriguez. Matz provides the Yankees with a reliable mid-tier starter with a huge upside, but this may be null and void in just a couple of days.
