Just five days before the Yankees open up the 2018 campaign in Toronto, the injury bug has found Greg Bird once again.
First tweeted by Brendan Kuty, the Yankee first baseman was scratched from today’s spring training lineup with a sore right foot, and will be headed back to Tampa to be examined by the teams physician. Bird was kept out the majority of the 2017 season due to an ankle injury on the same foot, that required surgery back in July.
Bird has struggled thus far into camp, slashing just .154/.267/.231 with a homer and four RBI heading into today’s game, and now may have even more to be concerned about.
The 25 year-old was slated to be the Yankees Opening Day first baseman, and likely would be splitting up the three headed monster of Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gary Sanchez. However, although further details on the seriousness of the injury are not yet reported, this could be yet another hit to Bird’s injury derailed career.
